What inspires someone to be dedicated to a cause or purpose? Believe it or not, not everyone wants to help for the benefit of helping. We live in a society now that now asks the fatal question, “What’s in for me?” That warm and fuzzy feeling you get from doing something good is slowly fading from the human spirit. Sure, there are still many people that help, but there is no money in it. You have to make money and support yourself first, then you can donate $5 here and there to charity. But is that your warm and fuzzy now? $5 to charity or some change to a homeless person? That very homeless person you may have walked by 10 times before and you’re afraid they will remember you for not giving them change on that 11th pass? It that your warm and fuzzy? Or did you pick a child’s name off the Christmas tree in the mall that had a list of clothes and toys they wished for? You went and bought the items and dropped them off unwrapped and walked away? Never saw the child’s eyes when the gift was open nor will you ever meet them. Was that your warm and fuzzy?
We have all tried to find ways to be charitable with donations and money. Even when we give away old clothes or broken electronics we feel like we have earn the right to be called charitable people. But is that charity or just a form of recycling or throwing away your own things? Some volunteer their time for status. Some want to volunteer more, but again, there is no money in it. Time! That is the ultimate gift. To give your time, without pay, directly to someone who needs it. To be able to see their reaction when they know you are there for them. No gift of money or clothes will give you a longer lasting warm and fuzzy than that and sometimes that gives those you help their own warm and fuzzy too.
